Methods of Developing Ideas: With a Focus on Vacations

CAUSE & EFFECT:
When people go on vacations, they automatically become relaxed.  Due to the worry free environment, and typically the nice weather, people become happier and tend to take the time to enjoy the moment, resulting in less stress.  

CONTRAST:
Vacations to resorts are very different compared to vacations to different cities and countries.  The main objective of going to a resort is to spend time on the beach, drink alcohol, and consume endless amounts of vitamin D.  That is a very relaxed vacation as opposed to travelling to a place like New York where lots of sightseeing and walking around takes place, therefore being a less relaxing experience. 

COMPARISON:
Vacations can be compared to sleep.  The main common aspect that ties these things together is the idea of escaping into another world.  Elaborating on that idea, in both vacations and sleep, they are both an escape from reality into a dream world. 

ANECDOTE:
Ever since I was a little girl, my family and I would go on a vacation every summer.  Usually it would be to a beautiful resort in the South.  My first trip was to Havana, Cuba and my father and I took a scooter into the town and got to experience both the city life of Cuba and the resort, as well.  Our scooter broke down far into the city, and the school children helped us get it started again.  Little did we know, the Cuban children were smarter than we thought!

PROCESS ANALYSIS:
Vacations are very relaxing, but they require a lot of planning as well.  First, you have to choose your destination depending on the type of vacation you’re looking for.  You then have to book your trip, and obviously, pay the amount needed.  After that, you must pack the clothing and necessities for the vacation, and finally, you will be able to leave and get to your stress free vacation.

DEFINITION:                                                                                                                                      
A vacation is defined to be freedom or release from duty, business, or activity.  According        to this definition, a vacation is known to be relaxing and stress relieving, as you don’t need to worry about anything in your life, and it’s a good time to refresh, and release negative energy  and tension. 

My favourite short story would have to be 'The Last Rung on the Ladder' by Stephen King, and my favourite song at the moment I would say is 'Safe and Sound' by Taylor Swift, featuring The Civil War.  I began to wonder why I liked them both at around the same time, and figured they had to be related... somehow.

One of the thematic connections between the song ‘Safe and Sound’ by Taylor Swift featuring The Civil War, and the story, ‘The Last Rung on the Ladder’, by Stephen King, would be the sense of trust.  Within the story, Kitty, trusts her big brother with no questions asked, when she is asked to let go of the ladder.  The point in the story where I established that Kitty truly trusted Larry was when she expressed how she felt about Larry.  When Larry asked, ““You didn't know? Didn't know what I was doing?' She shook her head. 'And when I told you to let go you . . . you just did it?' She nodded.  'Kitty, how could you do that?'  She looked at me with those deep blue eyes. 'I knew you must have been doing something to fix it,' she said. 'You're my big brother. I knew you'd take care of me.'”  This section in the story connected me to the specific line of the song, where Swift sings, “Just close your eyes.  You and I will be, safe and sound.”  This line connects to the story in a literal sense, as they both convey the message that trust comes automatically when you love someone. Another main idea that connects these two pieces of media is the sense of protection.  Larry was always there to protect Kitty, always.  In the song she sings, “no one can hurt you now.” They both show a strong sense of security about their loved ones.  Lastly, the idea of reassurance is common between the two.  Kitty was always reassured by Larry that she would always have him by her side, no matter what.  In the song, she sings “you’ll be alright.” Three words of complete reassurance, in which seem like the truth, even if it’s a lie.  Through all these common ideas of these pieces of media, it shows that they are strongly thematically connected, as well as complement and enhance each other.
